Nanuchka!

As anticipated, the Nanuchka CD release party was a full success. The band and its extended family of performers were so excited and obviously happy for the evening that they couldn’t help but fill the room with love. Nanuchka friends/fans are great - lots of dancers. The crowd was thick, but not oppressive. Everyone was grooving along and cheering the brilliance. My favorite moment of the whole night was when I opened my eyes (I close my eyes when I dance - try it) and saw a handful of folks coupled up and dancing blissfully together.

Take a look at their myspace for photos (Maria’s comments); everyone is all smiles.

Yula, Roy, and John (a complete iron man on drums) played a beautifully paced show that transitioned between bouncy, up-tempo numbers are more contemplative keyboard - based songs. My friends Bret and Everett, both new to Nanuchka’s music, both gave props for the variety of music in the set. And, Bret said it best, “she’s very charming.” Word. As well I was completely impressed (and often touched) by the guest musicians. I found the duet with Jack Terricloth particularly poignant (again, myspace for the pics). I don’t recall the clarinet player’s name, but he/they completely wailed on what sounded like a traditional Israeli folk song. Top - notch musicianship. Brilliant performers. Fantastic chemistry. Fucking great.

Also, not to be forgotten. They brought a tasty Middle-Eastern buffet for all to enjoy. Not only can Nanuchka rock, but they also host righteously.

And the CD? I’ve had it on repeat all day. I love it (the guitar shredding on track 4 - YES, YES, YES). I highly recommend the album to anyone who loves music. It’s a very loveable collection of songs and the finest I’ve heard this year.

i think the best way to get a copy (for the time being) is to send them a message via myspace - www.myspace.com/nanuchka - or hit up a show (they’re playing tonight).
